Durban
THE KINGDOM OF THE ZULUS, THE DRAKENSBERG & SUNNY BEACHES
DurbanBeachfront

Durban is the gateway to KwaZulu Natal and the mountain kingdom of Lesotho, the world famous Drakensberg and South Africa's beautiful wildlife parks. On the East Coast of South Africa is the subtropical city of Durban, the Zulu name eThekwini describes the city perfectly. Thekweni means “where the Earth and Ocean meet”, the city centre overlooks a golden beach. Its all about the beach in this surf friendly city. This is South Africa’s playground and its carnival atmosphere makes it great for family holidays. However, Durban is also a bustling deep sea harbour and international conferencing destination, which makes this city both a bustling hive of activity for businessmen and tourists alike.

KwaZulu-Natal hosts some of South Africa's most beautiful reserves, from the nature reserves of St Lucia and Drakensberg and game reserves at Mkuze and Hluhluwe-Umfolozi there is a wealth of wildlife and exquisite scenery to keep the traveller occupied and enthralled.

WHERE TO STAY

Drakensberg

Many holiday makers make Durban's beachfront their home-away-from home while on holiday, and the central Durban area is one of South Africa's most popular accommodation destinations.

If the beachfront does not appeal there are a range of properties inland in Durban itself to choose as your base for exploration. If you are heading up the north coast, Umhlanga and surrounds is also a stunning destination for holidays on the beach and close to major entertainment centres.

If you want to head out of the city head up north to South Africa's Elephant Coast where wildlife abounds, or head to the Drakensberg for hiking, birding and any outdoor sport imaginable, or drop your bags down the South Coast where small holiday homes are the perfect opportunity for that break that you so desperately need.

WHERE TO PLAY

When on the coast of this beautiful province the action is all about the water and the surf, while when you head inland there are wild animals and beautiful landscapes to take in. The province is also filled with history, from pre-colonial tribal warfare to colonial battles for supremacy. The province is the site of many historical battles between settlers and local tribes, amongst local tribes, and between the Boers and the British. A tour through this province provides visitors with a taste of South Africa's turbulent history.

There are a range of tours available for visitors to the province to experience this beautiful province - from city tours which take in the sights of Durban, to provincial excursions which take you up and out of the city for a few days or longer, or whatever your heart desires. From the outskirts of Lesotho's Mountain Kingdom to the gorgeous beaches this province awaits you.

WHERE TO EAT

WhereToEat

If you are heading out of the city there are a range of hotels where you can enjoy superb cuisine as well as spend a night or two in luxury in the countryside.

Or on balmy evenings diners can enjoy el fresco style dining under wild African skies with Acacia trees as your canopy, a fire as your warmth and African bush cuisine at its best in this beautiful African province.
